The last lecture I listened to was given by Professor Rojecki. His blog covers relationships between politics and economy. He opens his lecture by asking the students what they are worried about. I think for any type of topic this is a great way to open a lecture for college students. This one pertained to careers and jobs which relates to politics but this is something that can be asked to compare what worries the students have to help them realize and understand they need to be grateful for what they have. Although this is slightly irrelevant, I think it is beneficial to do this to open the mind of our generation because one problem I believe they have is only worrying about them and not worrying about their future in society and with their entire family.
One question Professor Rojecki asks is how many of the student watches the news. Most answered no because the news is always containing negative things that will only stress and overwhelm them. He makes a great point that we have to not only watch the news but keep up with what is going on by listening and reading other sources of media and communication in order to know when our politicians are lying or telling the truth; so we can formulate an accurate opinion on what is happening in our society for our sake and our families sake.
I am a huge believer of not following the latest trends just because everyone else is; conforming. Professor Rojecki brings up Apple Products. Everyone has them because they are “cool.” Yet one huge reason for having a disconnect between the economy and the politics is because we are operating in China and other countries taking jobs away from our own people. This argument can go back and forth for days.
Overall I enjoyed his lecture and I believe that keeping up with politics is necessary because it directly affects us. Regardless if politics frustrates us or now it is something we need to have a basic understanding of, at minimum, in order to understand what is going on and why and to have a valid opinion.

  1. I feel as if a good majority college students and yuppies today use excuses such as "stress" or "negativity" within the media as a reason for not keeping up with political activity. It is our right as citizens of America to inform ourselves and use this information to make our country a better place to live. It's a shame that our country's youth aren't using the many opportunities granted to them.

  2. I agree that students should pay close attention to politics, even if it stresses them out to hear all the negative things that the news says. This issue ties into our class's discussion of cognitive load and cognitive dissonance. The students that were in this class already other classes and perhaps jobs to think about, so the ones that didn't watch the news, didn't want to use their time watching the news, which may teach them some things that are sad or disturbing.

  3. I can also agree that it would be beneficial for young adults to pay closer attention to politics. If they're stressed about their future, it's their own fault. Staying informed is simple and we're fortunate enough to be able to have the resources to do so.

  4. I also agree with a lot of your points, especially the point made that youth of today seems to care more about what is happening momentarily, rather than what will happen down the road (assumptions being made that there will just BE jobs). Staying informed is something we as youth believe is not essential however, as the professor proves, being informed with what is going on in the world ties directly to our job market and futures.
